Nadal's extraordinary season reached new heights when he toppled Chilean Fernandez in a best-of-five set final. The Spanish bull saved two set points in the second set, held every service game and won 6-3 7-6 (7-2) 6-3. The gold medal was the first ever for Spain in Olympic tennis. Nadal has won 38 of his past 39 matches. Russian Elena Dementieva took advantage of compatriot Dina Safina's 17 double faults to claim the women's singles gold medal. Yet to win a grand slam title, Dementieva downed Safina 3-6 7-5 6-3. In doubles, American sisters Venus and Serena Williams won their second gold medal, beating Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual, of Spain 6-2, 6-0.
